Yesterday I went to chiropractor because I had 2 subluxed ribs in my right shoulder area.
Basically, 2 ribs had popped right out of the cage and I had to go see my chiro, Erica, for her to pop them back in (thanks to my 9-year-old, Joey, for the photo)…
This happens to me on occasion and a lot of it has to do with my poor shoulder mechanics from when I was a younger athlete.
Now, because I’ve been training quite intensely, my shoulder will have a tendency to get out of its socket and cause the subluxation in my ribs.
I’m usually able to handle the discomfort – it’s somewhat painful, but more of the annoying kind – but this time around I really couldn’t handle it.
I’ve been working hard to really maintain my technique when I press and snatch, but at times when it’s time to push the envelope, I sometime get caught messing up my shoulder.
It’s nice to have an expert get in there to fix me and to help me improve my mechanics.
It seem as though I’m not alone since close to 40% of all resistance training injuries affect the shoulder complex, making it the #1 injury by far. And that’s just the people that went to their practitioner about their issue – like me.
If you just have an annoying ache you could be headed down a slippery slope if you don’t take some action to keep your shoulders healthy which is why I know the signs of when something is wrong and go see Dr. Erica as soon as I can to get fixed.
It should be obvious by now that I’m not a huge fan of Western medicine when it comes to issues that we can just as easily prevent like shoulder discomfort.
You and I should never let it get to the point where we are completely immobile and can’t perform our workouts or live our lives with annoying shoulder pain.
So instead of waiting until it’s too late, we can be proactive and do something about it.
Many a health issue can be avoided if we just focused on prevention instead of being reactive and only going to the doctor to get a pill because – or worse, surgery – because it’s too late.
