I must admit, I am not much of an MMA fan. Growing up, I watched the WWF a lot – Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and The British Bulldogs were my favourite.
The one thing that I do admire about MMA is how ridiculously "in shape" these guys are.
They don’t workout, they TRAIN.
Take, for example, GSP (a homegrown Canadian boy like myself). Not only does GSP display power that would knock most people into next Tuesday, but he is also an INCREDIBLE athlete. I once read in a magazine that his vertical jump is close to 36".
Pound for pound, MMA fighters possess some of the most functional strength of any athlete.
But let’s get down to the real reason why people like train like MMA fighters…they look darn good.
Crazy ripped abs. Capped shoulders. And striations in their backs that you wouldn’t even see on a skinned cadaver.
I’ll admit, I’m curious about the training methods used by these fighters and how they are able to get so lean, yet maintain most – if not all – of their muscle mass.
Fortunately, I’ve got a friend who trains fighters for a living. His name is Eric Wong and trains and usually corners (sits in their corner during fights) A LOT of fighters.
Last week we got together to talk about training and film some videos for you. I filmed some kettlebell stuff that his fighters can use to help amp up their training and he filmed some cool bodyweight stuff that you can inject into your kettlebell program.
Here is the first one that we filmed at my friend Colin’s beautiful MyoDesign studio in Downtown Toronto…
We’ve done a few more videos in this series (including a chin-up video that taught me a lot), so stay tuned!
Have a great weekend!

Chris, love your training information. Just thought you should know that you mean complement, not compliment–they’re two totally different words.

MMA fighters are as fit as can be. Wrestlers and boxers go 2 minute rounds and sometimes up to 3 minutes. MMA athletes are going 5 minutes, up to 10 minute rounds. If you are not in top shape, there is no way you can endure this. Pretty incredible in my eyes.
It’s not just about how you look – it’s how that translates. Great stuff Chris, GSP has trained his way to being the best. Thanks for sharing.
