I don’t know about you, but it’s around this time of the year that I start to experience "Resolution Hangover".
As soon as the New Year rolls around I hit the ground running on my goals and try to do my best to keep up the momentum. I’m on schedule, my energy is high, I’m tracking everything…I’m on a Resolution High.
Then a few weeks go by and routine just starts to feel like routine again and I start to lose steam. A little procrastination here, a little "I’ll get around to it" there and before I know it, it’s April and I’m nowhere near to accomplishing any of the short term goals that I’ve set for myself.
I know for a fact that it happens every year around this time to a lot of people.
So how do we get back on track to achieving our fat loss goals?
When I was training full time I used to hate it when my new clients used me as an excuse to them not getting results.
Sometimes I think that people hire trainers to absolve themselves of any accountability or responsibility to achieving their fat loss goals.
One conversation really sticks out in my head…
Client: "Chris, I’m disappointed. I’ve been working with you for almost 2 months now and I’ve only lost 2lbs. I’m not sure if this is the right program for me"
Me: "Wow, that’s too bad. But let’s not focus on the bad stuff. Let’s think positive! Tell me about your weekend!
Client: "Oh, we had a great time. My husband and I checked out that trendy new restaurant with some friends. You know, the one that’s supposed to have the amazing wine list? I had the pasta – you know, because I wanted to treat myself for all the hard work that I’ve been doing from my workouts – and had the cheesecake for dessert. We had such a good time, before we knew it the 4 of us had gone through 4 amazing bottles of wine. We didn’t get home until midnight and it was brutal because we had to get up the next morning at 5am to take our son to hockey. Did you know that there aren’t any good coffee places open at 5am, so we had to settle for one of those 24-hour drive-thru places on the way to the rink. The coffee tasted so bad that I had to put some extra sugar in it.
Me: "So did you have time to have breakfast?"
Client: "Well, every Saturday morning before hockey, we each have an apple fritter. It’s our family ritual before hockey games. I know you say that that stuff is bad, but I hate to break family tradition and there must be some health benefits to it because it’s got some apples in it!
But wait, I had asked you why I wasn’t losing any weight. What’s going on with the workouts you’re giving me? Why aren’t they working?"
Obviously this is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. The take home message is this…
What you do in the 3 hours per week that you train with kettlebells (in fact, I think most people need LESS time than that to achieve great fat loss results) pales in comparison to what you do in the remaining 165 hours.
Are you getting enough sleep?
Are you conscious of what you’re eating and how much?
Are you conscious of what you’re DRINKING and how much?
Are you managing your stress levels?
Are you active – do you walk, ride your bike, play a sport – not for exercise but for enjoyment?
Do you live in an environment that is supportive of your goals?
Those are all questions that you need to ask yourself before you start looking at changing your workouts.
All those factors above have a HUGE impact on your results to achieve fat loss.
The fact of the matter is that the best fat loss workout program out there is THE ONE THAT YOU STICK TO CONSISTENTLY. Any well written program will work in aiding you with your fat loss goals.
I just happen to have written what I believe to be the best fat loss program around, The TT KETTLEBELL Revolution, but I’m sure that if you picked up any other reputable program, you would definitely some lose fat.
It’s NOT just about your workouts, it’s about the quality of your life and what you do in the other 165 hours of the day that you’re not training.

This is so spot on, what you do for those 165 hours is very important!
